Mighty Muskingum River Raft Race!

Sunday, Check-in at Noon, Racing Begins 1PM
Start Location: Muskingum Boat Ramp @ Indian Acres Park
Finish Line: Harmar Bridge

This epic build your own raft race will take place on the Lower Muskingum River. The event is a great team building exercise, creative summer project, and/or a great way to promote your business/organization.

The race was started in the 70s by a local United States Junior Chamber group and continued on as a highlighted event during RTA for several years. The race hasn't been held for many years but RTA now officially runs the event!

There is a singles category for 1 rider boats and a group category for boats of 2 or more riders. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each category.

Learn about the history and wildlife of the Island while exploring one of the most mysterious sites in the the Mid-Ohio Valley and becoming a part of it's rich history.

The Muskingum may be mighty, but her water is not particularly quick. Be ready for a steady paddle throughout the trip. Beer Fest awaits at the end of your journey!

Paddle one of Ohio's largest rivers and experience the thrill of locking thru the only hand operated lock system left in the world.

* Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen.
* This paddle is unsupported.
* No transportation is provided.

Volunteers will be out paddling on the river, but this paddle is at your own pace. You may paddle in groups or on your own.

This event is a great chance to see the historic Muskingum Lock and Dam System which is the only remaining hand-operated lock system in our country! The Muskingum River Parkway and its 160-year-old navigation system were designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Starting Location: Boat ramp and shelter house on a property with a large mowed field on Muskingum River Road approximately 18 minutes from Festival Headquarters and halfway between the Lowell and Devol's Dam Locks (5010 Muskingum River Rd. Lowell, OH 45744)

Bathrooms located at Devol’s Dam (mile 5) and Indian Acres Boat ramp (mile 9).

Drop-in at Indian Acres Boat Ramp (147 Linwood Avenue)

Grab your friends, kayak, and lights to help us light up the Muskingum!

We will paddle roughly 2 miles to the takeout at Boathouse BBQ in Harmar Village side of the river. Boathouse BBQ will be providing participants a special discount!

Arrive at the Indian Acres Boat ramp at 8:30PM for the group launch at 9.

NOTE: All kayaks must have a white light that is visible from 360⁰ and PFDs are required.

Veto Lake Lunch Paddle

A leisure paddle on one of our areas calmest waters. Enjoy paddling with the group or on your own. You're sure to encounter some of natures finest on this paddle as we paddle into tributaries, among the Giant Lilly Pads and beneath the wings of Cranes, Hawks, Osprey and (if we are lucky) Eagles.

Paddlers meet at the Veto Lake wilderness area boat ramp (can be found on Google Maps with this name).

MOV'n Dragons' Dragon Boat Exhibition

The MOV'n Dragons of the Mid-Ohio Valley, Marietta's dragon boat team, will be offering an opportunity for the public to view the dragon boat during the RTA Festival. Enjoy an exhibition of one of the world's oldest sports at the Broughton Boathouse, 814 Gilman Avenue, Marietta. Witness the MOV'n Dragons as they display their boat and demonstrate the ancient art of Dragon Boating. Those interested in learning about Dragon boating can watch from the shoreline or from their own canoe or kayak.

A dragon boat is 40 feet long and can hold 20 paddlers sitting in pairs. A drummer sits in front, and a steersperson is in the back keeping the boat on course.

Dragon Boating originated in China more than 2000 years ago and today is a popular sport worldwide. The MOV'n Dragons have been boating on the Muskingum River for the past 16 years and honor the memory of their founder, Gretchen Feldmaier. We welcome all women over the age of 18 to join us in "Awakening the Dragon within us".

The MOV'n Dragons, the Mid-Ohio Valley's dragon boat team, is offering an opportunity for the public to experience dragon boating during the RTA Festival.

Excursions leave from the Broughton Boathouse, 814 Gilman Avenue, Marietta.

Paddles and lifejackets are provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle and dress for being on the water. Men and women over 18 years of age who are vaccinated are welcome. Children 12 to 18 years of age may participate with an adult chaperone.

Meet up at the Devola Dam / Muskingum River Lock #2 for a self-guided* paddle down this beautiful historic river. Meet up location can be found in Google Maps under "Muskingum River Lock and Dam Number Two, Marietta, OH 45750".

Be sure not to paddle close to the dam as currents can be dangerous and pull you into the dam quickly. Paddle down river to multiple take out options including Indian Acres boat ramp located at 147 Linwood Ave in Marietta or the Williamstown boat ramp located at 101 Julia Ave in Williamstown WV. If you choose not to arrange a shuttle back to your vehicle be prepared for the paddle back up stream.

*RTA will not be formally registering, organizing, and leading this activity. These are publicized times for folks to get together and adventure on a ride/paddle/hike as a group.

Meet at the Veto Lake boat ramp at 7:30pm and enjoy a self-guided* sunset paddle on the lake! Be sure to bring proper lighting and life jackets. Veto Lake is a great place to see different kinds of wildlife and is a beautiful lake to sit back and enjoy amazing sunsets.

Directions: From Marietta, travel south on SR7 for approximately 6 miles and turn right onto CR3 / Veto Rd. Continue straight for ~ another 6 miles and you will see the lake on the right as you cross a bridge. Immediately after the bridge is the boat ramp and parking. RTA Paddle with a Doc

What to Expect: A spin-off of Walk with a Doc, this will be a ~5 mile paddle with Dr. Tom Bartsokas of Memorial Health System. Dr. Bartsokas will provide a short educational talk on health and fitness. The group will then do a leisurely paddle down river and end at the Williamstown boat ramp. Paddle is guided but unsupported. Participants should bring their own gear, food, water, etc. For boat rental and shuttle information, contact the Marietta Adventure Company.

Time: Depart from the Marietta Adventure Company @ 3pm or meet at the Devol’s Dam at 3:30pm

Location: Devol’s Dam (1454 River Rd, Marietta)
